Coffee Brewing Methods: AeroPress
Alan Adler created the AeroPress in 2005, making it one of the newest brewing methods on the market. I bought one of these coffee brewers a few years ago, and I love experimenting with different beans in it. I think the AeroPress‘ convenience draws in its users. Compact, lightweight, and durable, you can transport it just about anywhere. Therefore, I always take mine with me on trips, and campers love them! The AeroPress uses air pressure as part of its extraction and typically makes a more concentrated cup of coffee. Therefore, many people add either water or milk to dilute the coffee.
Before I explain how I brew with my AeroPress, I’d like to underline that you should always drink coffee exactly as you like it! Particularly with this brewing method, coffee experts continue to experiment with it because of its young age. I’ve detailed for you how I brew coffee with my AeroPress, but please make adjustments as you see fit in order to get the perfect cup for you and your tastebuds!
Making AeroPress Coffee:
- AeroPress filters
- 13 grams of coffee
- Stirring utensil
- A beautiful mug for serving in! (Note that the circumference of your vessel should fit around the cap of the AeroPress in order to avoid spills and burns!)
- First, weigh 13 grams of coffee. In this cup, I use Kunjin coffee roasted at Wild Gift Coffee in Austin, Texas. It is a washed coffee from the Waghi Valley in Papua New Guinea. For more information on why we weigh coffee with a scale, check out this link.
- Next, grind the coffee. While some people use a very fine setting, I prefer to use a medium/fine grind.
- Now, heat the water in a kettle. I use a 200-205 degree temperature. Before I begin brewing, I wet the small filter that fits into the cap. This helps eliminate any paper filter taste and attach the filter onto the cap.
- Pour the ground coffee into the AeroPress with the plunger fit snugly, face down, and zero out your scale.
- Next, steadily pour water into the AeroPress until the scale reads 145 grams, or about 5 ounces of water.
- Give the mixture a quick stir in order to wet all of the grounds.
- Now, twist the cap in place, and start your timer for one minute.
- Next, fit your vessel of choice around the cap, and carefully flip everything over to sit on top of the vessel.
- Finally, press the plunger carefully until all of the liquid has run through the filter. This should take a good deal of pressure and about 20-30 seconds to accomplish.
- Ta da! You have a beautiful cup of coffee!
